Trigger Fly fishing sight Costa Rica

Fly fishing in Costa Rica for Triggerfish.

Many of our guests have had the pleasure of fishing for oceanic gray triggers in Costa Rica. They’re a very popular fish because they’re so beautiful and easy to catch. However, if you hook into one of these fish, you should be prepared to keep from away from the razor sharp corals.

With their bright colors and unique shape, they are a great fish to target by panga as well.. Be sure to take your trigger fly rod when you come on out to Costa Rica and maybe you can connect to one yourself!

You are going to need a strong enough fly rod to keep the fish from darting into the coral or to turn the fishes head away from any danger that he can get tangled in and shred your leader or sometimes even fly line off.

So let's talk tackle.

A good reel should also be a mid- the advantage of a large arbor with a reliable drag and capable of holding a minimum of 150 yards of backing are features you must consider.

Additionally, in order to match the weight of your rod with a fly line, select a floating line that over-lines the rod for better road loading so you can catch a trigger from the beach, choose a line with a quick, intermediate taper such as the RIO outbound.

Also with reference to leaders and tippet for trigger-fishing I recommend starting out with 16lb and dropping down to 12lb if the fish are not responding. Have tippet in both 16lb and 20lb to replace cut off leader or to add length to your leader for presentation.

Don't forget one thing - when you're wading, please make sure you have a fully enclosed flats boot that offers protection from the sea urchins and sharp coral.

Keep your fishing equipment in tip top condition. Use a “plier” to unhook the hook, then use a hook sharpener to keep the hook sharp. We recommend using sun protection and rain gear too, a hat and flat boots zip up booty for the flats or reefs.
