For centuries, the Upper Savage River served as a water supply for the largest mill around. Today, this scenic waterway serves as a vital source of natural fish habitat, as well as an integral link in the chain of fish migration runs along the East Coast.
The Patapsco River is one of the most beloved sites in Maryland. It’s a great place to go fishing year-round, but it’s especially popular in the spring and fall when the water is cooler and the fish are swimming around more freely.
If you’re looking for a day’s adventure, you can definitely find spots along the shoreline where you can cast your line and reel in your catch. But we recommend using your boat because it’s more fun! Just make sure you keep an eye on the weather forecast before you get started—if there are any storms coming through, you might want to plan another day!
Spring is also a good time to catch some dry fly fishing on your way to or from your favorite stream or river. You can cast flies directly into the water and let them float down behind you as you walk along, or use an indicator rig with weighted floating leaders and attractor patterns such as Sculpin, Red Sucker, etc., which will sink immediately when they touch bottom vegetation and weeds present there.
Dry fly fishing can be very productive in spring because insects are just starting to emerge from their winter hiding places when we get started fishing here again! Streamer fishing can be excellent during this month because there are so many smallmouth bass out there that they’ll take your streamers right downriver (or up) even if they’re not very big around.”
Fly fishing season peaks between the months of April and October. Though, for fly fishermen willing to brave the cold weather, it is technically a year-round sport. Additionally, with an abundance of warm weather destinations, fly fishing can be enjoyed all year long.
Fly fishing is best enjoyed in locations with ample water for wading and casting, as well as areas with convenient access to the river or stream banks.
The best months for fly fishing are March through May, June through August and September through November. These months usually have the most consistent weather conditions and are also when most species are available to fish for.
